Phone Won't Turn On? Here's What to Do Before You Panic

Your phone screen is completely black. You press the power button — nothing. You hold it down — still nothing. Don't assume it's dead. Most of the time, a phone that won't turn on has a fixable problem.

Here's a systematic approach to figuring out what's wrong.

Step 1: Force Restart Your Phone

A regular power button press won't fix a frozen or crashed phone. You need a force restart, which is different from a normal restart.

If this works, great — your phone was just frozen. If it keeps happening, there's likely a software or hardware issue worth checking.

Step 2: Charge It (But Check the Cable)

If the force restart didn't work, your battery might actually be dead. But before you assume the battery is bad:

• Try a different cable and charger. Cables are the #1 point of failure. The cable that "works fine" might only be delivering a trickle
• Use a wall outlet, not a laptop USB port. USB ports deliver much less power
• Wait 15-30 minutes. A completely drained battery needs time before it can even show the charging screen
• Look for the charging indicator. Even a dead phone should show a battery icon or LED after a few minutes on the charger

Step 3: Check for Physical Damage

Think about what happened before the phone died:

• Did it get dropped? The display connector can come loose from an impact. The screen might be off even though the phone is actually on — try calling it from another phone

Step 4: Try Recovery/DFU Mode

If your phone shows signs of life (vibration, sounds, LED) but the screen stays black, the display might have failed while the phone itself is fine.

For iPhone, try connecting to a computer and entering DFU mode. iTunes/Finder should detect the phone even if the screen is dead. For Android, try holding Volume Down + Power to enter the bootloader — you may see text on screen even when the normal display driver has crashed.

When It's a Hardware Problem

If none of the above worked, you're likely dealing with one of these:
