We repair cracked screens every single day. So you'd think we'd tell everyone to buy a screen protector, right? It's more nuanced than that.

Here's what we actually see in the shop — what screen protectors do well, what they don't, and which ones are worth your money.

What Screen Protectors Actually Protect Against

Screen protectors are great at preventing scratches. Keys, coins, sand in your pocket — a protector takes that abuse instead of your actual screen. Modern phone glass (Gorilla Glass, Ceramic Shield) is scratch-resistant but not scratch-proof.

They're less effective against cracks from drops. Here's why: a screen cracks from impact force, not surface contact. When your phone hits concrete, the force travels through the glass. A thin protector on top doesn't absorb enough impact to prevent the underlying screen from shattering.

What Actually Prevents Cracked Screens

Based on what we see in the shop, here's what makes the real difference:

1. A good case with raised edges. A case that extends 1-2mm above the screen creates a bumper that prevents the glass from hitting the ground on face-down drops. This matters 10x more than any screen protector
2. Tempered glass protector + case combo. The case absorbs impact force; the protector handles scratches. Together, they reduce screen repair odds significantly
3. Not using your phone over hard surfaces. Sounds obvious, but most screen cracks happen in bathrooms (tile floor), parking lots (concrete), and kitchens (tile/stone). Carpet and wood floors are much more forgiving

When Screen Protectors Are a Waste

• If your phone already has a cracked screen. A protector over a crack just hides it while the crack spreads
• Liquid protectors — always. They don't measurably reduce damage in any scenario we've seen
• If you use a heavy-duty case. OtterBox-style cases with built-in screen covers make a separate protector redundant
• Cheap protectors that bubble or peel. A poorly applied protector reduces touch accuracy and looks worse than minor scratches

Our Recommendation

Spend $10 on a tempered glass protector and $20-40 on a case with raised edges. That $30-50 investment prevents the vast majority of screen repairs we see. It won't make your phone indestructible, but it shifts the odds heavily in your favor.
