Here's what we've learned from the repair bench about phone case protection — no sponsorships, no affiliate links, just what we actually see work.
Forget marketing terms like "military-grade" or "10-foot drop tested." Here's what actually determines whether your phone survives a fall:
A hard polycarbonate shell over a soft TPU inner. Brands like OtterBox Defender, Spigen Tough Armor, and UAG Monarch live here.
Phones in dual-layer cases survive falls that would shatter bare phones. We rarely see cracked screens from these unless the drop was extreme (concrete from 6+ feet, ran over by a car).
Single-material but well-designed. Spigen Ultra Hybrid, Caseology Parallax, RhinoShield CrashGuard. Slimmer than dual-layer but still effective.
These handle 3-4 foot drops onto hard surfaces well. The sweet spot between protection and bulk.
Thin polycarbonate or minimal TPU. Apple's MagSafe cases, Totallee, MNML. They protect against scratches but offer minimal drop protection.
We see cracked screens from these all the time. They look great. They just don't do much.
The front flap adds screen protection when closed, but most people leave them open. When open, they're worse than a basic case because the flap adds awkward weight distribution.
About 40% of our screen replacements come from caseless phones. If you go naked, at least use a glass screen protector — it won't prevent cracks from drops, but it will take the hit on flat-surface impacts.
A tempered glass screen protector adds a sacrificial layer. It won't prevent cracks from edge drops (that's the case's job), but it absorbs flat-surface impacts and prevents scratches. At $8-15 for a 3-pack, it's cheap insurance.
Skip liquid screen protectors — they do almost nothing. Tempered glass or nothing.
