Phone Overheating? What's Causing It and How to Cool It Down

Your phone is uncomfortably warm. Maybe hot enough that you don't want to hold it. Is it normal? Is it dangerous? Here's what you need to know.

When Heat Is Normal

Some heat is completely expected. Your phone is a tiny computer doing billions of calculations per second. It gets warm during:

• Gaming — intensive 3D games push the processor hard. 10-15 minutes of Genshin Impact will make any phone warm
• Video calls — camera + microphone + data transmission + screen all running at once
• Fast charging — energy conversion generates heat. Your phone cooling down after reaching 80% is normal
• First setup or major updates — indexing, downloading, and installing uses every component simultaneously
• GPS navigation — constant location tracking + screen on + cell data = heat

In all these cases, the phone should cool down within 5-10 minutes of stopping the activity.

When Heat Is a Problem

These are the warning signs we see before phones come in for repair:

Battery Swelling

The most serious. If your phone is hot AND the screen or back panel is slightly bulging or separating from the frame, stop using it immediately. A swelling battery can catch fire.

Random Overheating (No Heavy Use)

If your phone gets hot while idle or during light use (texting, browsing), something is wrong:

• Runaway app: Check battery usage in Settings. If one app is using 40%+ when you haven't used it, force-stop and uninstall
• Malware: Crypto-mining malware runs your processor at 100% in the background. Common on Android if you've installed apps from outside the Play Store
• Old battery: Degraded batteries have higher internal resistance, generating more heat during normal charging cycles
• Damaged charging port: A corroded or bent port can cause heat during charging as electricity flows through damaged connections

Quick Fixes to Try Right Now

1. Remove the case. Cases trap heat. Take it off and let the phone cool for 5 minutes
2. Close all apps. Swipe them all away. On iPhone, swipe up from the bottom; on Android, use the recent apps button
3. Turn off location services temporarily. GPS is one of the hottest components
4. Disable Bluetooth and WiFi if you're not using them. Fewer radios = less heat
5. Restart the phone. This kills stuck processes that might be running the CPU at max
6. Move out of direct sunlight. Your phone's operating range is 32-95°F (0-35°C). A car dashboard in summer can hit 150°F

What NOT to Do

• Don't put it in the freezer or fridge. Rapid temperature change causes condensation inside the phone, which damages components more than the heat
• Don't blow on it with compressed air. You can push moisture and dust into the ports
• Don't charge it while it's hot. Wait until it cools down. Charging a hot battery accelerates degradation

When You Need a Repair

Bring it in if:

• It overheats during normal use every day
• Battery health is below 80% (iPhone) or the phone is 2+ years old with heat issues
• The back or screen is separating from the frame
